6th & 7th Grade Boat Racing

After a short break we are back with more pictures and stories from Akulliit!

After the 5th grade had so much fun with racing sailing boats in natural science, it was time for the 6th and 7th graders to try it out.

We built the "lake" with bits of wood and a bin bag. We used string and nails to hold it all together.

The wind for our sailing boats came from the balloons.

And ourselves!

The races were exciting - we will post video soon!

 

But we took too many photos - no one wants to be seen blowing up a balloon!

Akulliit Illugiaq 2012 - Day Three(ish)

We are still building our illugiaq.

Tupaarnaq cuts out a large square of snow.

Vittus and Kaaleeraq shape the building blocks.

The square Tupaarnaq cut needed four students to carry it.

Miilaaraq finds a smaller block.

Vittus and Kaaleeraq need to work together.

Sometimes the blocks of snow fall to pieces.

But we can use nearly everything we cut out of the snow.

The walls are getting higher and higher.

Pipaluk looks a little scary with the saw.

More blocks are cut out of the ground.

Kaaleeraq and Mario take a quick break for the camera.

Frederikke shapes the walls ready for another block of snow.

Pipaluk brings just the right piece.

Vittus finds a piece that just fits in the hand!

We need to cut a door soon.

But we are still not finished!

Så kom vi ud på isen med vores skøjter igen, men vi var ikke alene!

Fangeren var også på vej ud og vi kiggede på imens han kørte forbi.

Putting our skates on; it's time to hit the sea ice!

Zella braves the wind and minus 20 degrees to enjoy the skating rink the council has made on the ice.

It's time to have fun!

Herbert Island is in the distance...

...but we're not looking at the scenery...

...we're skating!

It's good to be on the ice.

There is a lot of space...

...room to move...

...and challenge each other to a race.

 At the end of the lesson we walk back to school on the ice road.

Ryper i Qaanaaq

Vi har ryper i Qaanaaq, men de er ikke nem at fange, derfor lave vi dem selv!

Det kræves lidt teknik, men det har 7. klasse godt styr på.

Mario ordne vingerne...

.. og så skal landskabet pyntes og fuglen males.

Akulliit Illugiaq 2012 - Day Three

Day three! Today we started with a cocoa break. We made it in the kitchen before coming down to the ice. Somebody added way too much sugar!

Then we did a little work.

Just in time for more hot chocolate.

A bit more work - the boys joined us too.

More hot chocolate!

We are getting a bit worried about our walls.

But the view is great!
